The weaving division of Mohan Spintex India Limited (MSIL) weaves yarn from the spinning division into greige fabric – woven cloth that has not yet been bleached, dyed or finished. It operates 324 air-jet looms and produces about 15,00,000 metres of fabric a month.[1]

The looms are from the Picanol Summum range, which in 2022 were reported to run at 1,100 rpm.[2] Greige fabric passes to the processing division or is sold directly to customers.[1]

Process

  1. Warping – thousands of yarn ends are wound in parallel onto a beam.
  2. Sizing – a protective coating is applied to the warp so it survives weaving.
  3. Drawing-in – each warp end is threaded through healds and reed, setting the pattern.
  4. Weaving – weft yarn is inserted across the warp by a jet of compressed air.
  5. Inspection – fabric is examined and faults are graded.

Why air-jet

Air-jet looms insert the weft with compressed air rather than a shuttle or rapier. They are among the fastest weaving machines available and are well suited to the wide, lightweight cotton fabrics used for bed linen. Their main operating cost is compressed air, which makes compressor efficiency an important energy consideration.

Fabric constructions

The division weaves percale, sateen, twill, damask, dobby and jacquard constructions, in 100% cotton and blends.[2] Warping and sizing machines from Karl Mayer were reported in 2022.[2]
