Mohan Spintex India Limited (MSIL) runs sustainability programmes covering energy, water, biodiversity and packaging. Textile processing uses large amounts of water, chemicals and energy, and these programmes are aimed chiefly at those impacts.[1]
Energy
Solar power
MSIL has installed 10.8 MW of rooftop solar generation, which it says avoids about 13,296 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year – equivalent, by the company's comparison, to planting 66,480 trees a year.[1] The plant is on the roofs of the Remalle unit; it began generating in July 2022, produces about 13 lakh units of electricity a month, and was financed partly by a ₹40 crore term loan.[2] The company also has a renewable-energy subsidiary, Mohan Renewable Energy India.[3] Mill buildings have large roof areas, so the panels need no additional land. Coal-free steam
Steam for fabric processing is generated from rice husk, a biomass fuel, instead of coal. The company reports that this avoids about 54,444 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, a reduction of 95% compared with coal.[1] The Krishna delta around Vijayawada is a major rice-growing region, making rice husk a locally available fuel.
Together, the two programmes are reported to avoid about 67,740 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.[1]
Water
The company's effluent treatment plant is oriented to zero liquid discharge and recovers 98% of process water for reuse. It also has 20 million litres of rainwater harvesting capacity.[1]
A zero liquid discharge plant typically combines biological treatment, filtration, reverse osmosis and evaporation, so that treated water returns to the process and dissolved salts are recovered as solids.[confirmation needed]
Biodiversity
MSIL reports planting more than 10,000 trees of 200 species, with 30% of its facility area under green cover.[1] Tree-planting drives have been held at Unit 2.[5]
Packaging and materials
The company reports that about 90% of its packaging now uses sustainable materials. Product development increasingly uses fibres such as organic cotton, BCI cotton and Tencel, and other blends with lower environmental impact.[1]
Approach
Whole-Time Director Gottimukkala Ravi Kumar has described sustainability at the company as part of daily operations rather than a separate function: "We do not treat sustainability as a department or a marketing theme—it is how we operate, every single day."[1]
